Movies have always had a rating system to utilize as a guide to let individuals or parents know if a show is proper for particular spectators. Many times it is used to protect children from inappropriate violence or sexual scenes. Many people have disagreed with the ratings of numerous movies and there has even been copyright infringement cases where a company deliberately deleted scenes from movies that they deemed inappropriate even though the movie had a good rating.

Movies are greatly different from each other and it is tremendously complicated to uphold a set standard that is consistent for every movie. One person may be upset by a semi-nude scene that suggests sexuality while another one watching the same movie may find that the suicide by gun scene is more offensive, diverse people have diverse reactions and beliefs about what is or is not unsuitable.

Nonetheless the rating system is based upon theme and content. It is really up to parents and individuals to choose if a movie is suitable or not. One should not rely entirely upon a rating system but only utilize it as a general guide.

A G rating means that the picture has been deemed suitable for general audiences. It may or may not be a children’s film but it will not contain sexual scenes, swearing, drug or alcohol use, cigarette smoking or violence.

PG stands for parental guidance. There may perhaps be some brief moments of the aforesaid scenes but it is not extreme. Parents are cautioned to be conscious that these passing scenes may exist. PG-13 is a stronger PG forewarning. These movies are as a rule unacceptable for children under the age of 13. There may be some nudity, suggested sexuality or violence. This rating is essentially for a movie that does not deserve an R rating but is still worse than the conventional PG.

An R movie restricts anybody under 17 to enter without the accompaniment of an adult guardian or parent. There are regularly sexual scenes, drug abuse or violence. Parents should be encouraged to watch the movies in advance and decide cautiously if the movie is fitting.

There is a new rating that is NC-17. No one under the age of 17 will be admitted into the movie theater. This movie may not inevitably be pornographic but it will contain adult content, be it sexual, violent or other that makes it completely inapt for someone below 17 years of age.

Parents and individuals need to take liability for their own decisions on which movies are suitable. The ratings system is just a general guide and should not be relied upon completely.
